Touring Alcatraz Island

Alcatraz_wharf2San Francisco is made up of a diverse group of people who love the city. Visitors will learn what the locals find so appealing when they see and experience the City by the Bay. There is the Golden Gate Bridge, one of the seven wonders of the modern world; the cable car and Cable Car Museum; and then there is Alcatraz Island.

Prepare for a full day of sightseeing when you visit Alcatraz Island, the most popular tourist attraction in San Francisco.  For 30 years, the Federal Bureau of Prisons used the facility as a maximum security penitentiary and it was the most infamous prison in the country.  Al Capone, George “Machine Gun” Kelley, and Robert “The Birdman” Stroud were among the prison’s notorious inmates.

Alcatraz prison is located on a 25-acre island just slightly over a mile from San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf.  About a million people visit Alcatraz each year.  The ferry ride across the San Francisco Bay to the island takes about 10 minutes. There are day and night tours available. The Alcatraz Night Tour includes special programs, tours, and activities not offered during the day. Upon arrival, and following a brief welcome and orientation, including a video about the prison, visitors are free to explore the island and the penitentiary at their own pace. Ferries which leave from Pier 33, depart & return with tourists approximately every half hour throughout the day.

Alcatraz was closed in 1963. Since then it has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in San Francisco.
